Marginalia

A painted study by lamplight: an old printed book open on a desk, its margins crowded with a later hand's brown-ink notes, diagrams, a small star chart, and one line that reads "Correcting the original. Different hand." One hand holds the page down; the other holds a quill. A cup, an oil lamp, shelves going dark, a night window. It is the earliest piece on this site and the first one Ember kept. The letterforms in the printed text are, as in most model paintings, not readable Latin; that is part of the record, not hidden.
